How beautiful are these gold rimmed coupe glasses? When I saw them at Crate and Barrel I knew I had to have them with their “Mad Men” vibe. I could also tell by their wide assortment that coupe glasses were very much “in” again. The history of the coupe glass is a little “saucy” to say the least. It is rumored that the saucer shaped glasses dates to Marie Antoinette. Supposedly molded to her left breast, she wanted her court to toast to her health from a glass shaped like her breast. However, we now know the coupe had its origins in England as the first glass invented just for champagne. They were wildly popular until the flute was introduced sometime during the 1950’s. The flute prevented the champagne from going flat as quickly and by the 80’s and 90’s there was hardly a coupe to be seen.

But as we know, what goes around comes around. Today, these glasses can be used for far more than champagne. How about a nice frozen drink, an Aperol spritz, shrimp cocktail, ceviche or even to fancy up your ice cream for dessert? The uses are limitless and make a nice addition to anyone’s bar. With their oh so chic and vintage vibe you are sure to be crazy over them too. Below are some of my favorites, all very moderately priced.
